The Survey and National Register Branch maintains a collection of paper survey files of historic resources surveyed by the office over the past 40 years. This collection is spread over two locations: our Asheville-based Western Office holds the files on resources located within 25 counties in Western North Carolina, while our Raleigh-based office holds the files on resources located within the other 75 counties of the state (Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina).
The survey files may contain original survey documentation, photographs, site maps, ancillary records - like newspaper clippings, and other materials. The files are no longer permitted to leave the State offices. Patrons are welcome to visit the office File Rooms to review and/or make scanned digital or photocopies of the survey files. Both offices have a scanner/photocopier machine for patron use.
To visit the Asheville office, please contact Hannah Beckman-Black. When planning your visit, please read the Western Office SHPO Survey File Room Policy. A list of the 25 Western North Carolina counties* can be found below.
Visits to the Raleigh office can be requested through the appointment form below. Please provide 48 hours notice and note that the Raleigh File Room is closed on Mondays. If you have questions please contact Chandrea Burch.
Prepare for your appointment by visiting our web map, HPOWEB, to determine which historic resources have been previously surveyed within your project area. Our staff can set aside the survey files you wish to review if you record the resources' Survey Site Numbers in the form below.
